If you’re craving something sweet, or need a snack idea for your kids, then grab a piece of fruit. It’s sweet, and much healthier than other processed foods.
Kids love to have candy, and other pre-processed foods and other foods that have a lot of sugar in them for snacks. As a society in general, we eat way too much sugar in our diets - doing so really desensitizes our taste buds, and what we like to eat. Cutting out candy and refined sugars is a great way to start getting back the tastes of foods.
If you’re not used to going without candy, or foods that have a lot of sugar in them, then it’s going to take some work to get there. You’ll likely not be able to cut them out immediately from your diet without having headaches, or really crave them. Cutting out refined sugar (such as candy or soda pop) will take a bit of time, but is definitely worth it.
Once you’ve pulled refined sugars from your diet, it’s much easier to taste the actual taste of food. Over the course of just a couple of months, you’ll really start to recognize the tastes and flavors of food much closer. And if you do eat candy or other high sugar foods, there’s a good chance you’ll find that they’re just too sweet for you.
However, in order to get to a place where you’re not craving sugar, you need to find a replacement for those foods. Fruits are one of the best foods to help you get over your sugar cravings. Fruits themselves are filled with a lot of sugar, and eating fruits all day long without other foods isn't necessarily healthy. However, if you are choosing between fruits and candy, fruits will win hands down every time.
The sugar in fruits is a natural sugar, not refined like that in candy. It’s better for your body overall, and your body will be able to handle it much better than refined sugar that is in candy.
Fruits can be a great snack for your kids as well. Rather than filling them up with Goldfish and fruit snacks, grab a piece of fruit for them to eat. Perhaps you have a banana or apple for a snack, or cut up some strawberries for them to eat. Fruits with breakfast foods are also quite tasty. Pancakes, waffles, yogurt, and crepes all pair extremely well with fruit.
Most every fruit is delicious in its own way. Oranges are great if you’re craving something juicy. Peaches are also great, when in season, to fill that same craving. If you want a fruit that’s not quite as sweet, cherries can often fill that role. If you want a really cheap fruit, watermelon is for you. And if you want to pretend you're a monkey, grab a banana.
There are tons of fruits beyond the basic and common fruits, and most of them are sweet and tasty. Don’t be afraid to try something you’ve never had before as they may really hit the spot for you.
If you’re craving something sweet, grab your favorite fruit to quench your desire. Leave the candy and refined sugar behind - your body will really thank you.
