Surprise pregnancies happen. Figuring out what to do is not always easy.
Whether you have another child already or not, getting pregnant when you are not trying to get pregnant always comes as a big surprise. More often than not, this shock comes in the form of not good news - you were not really wanting to get pregnant at the current time for whatever reason, so it is with mixed feelings that you learn of being pregnant. Determining your next steps are life altering for all involved.
First off, you have the choice to do what you feel is best. We’re of the opinion that a child should only be brought into this world if you can actually care for and take care of it. There are millions of children across the world that are born that don’t receive the love or care they deserve. Whatever you decide to do is up to you, but if you do plan to keep the baby, then make sure you’re committed to being a parent.
We also encourage you to strongly consider keeping the baby as well. If you already have kids or were planning on having kids, then this simply speeds up your timeline compared to what you were planning on doing. Yes, you don’t have as much time without kids or you may now have kids very close together that you hadn’t planned on, but this is really only a short term issue as you’ve got two young kids to take care of.
Beyond your desire and ability to actually care for a new baby, you also need to consider the finances of having a baby. If you’ve never had a baby before, then your expenses will be a bit higher than if you already have some of the basic necessities for a baby. That being said, the biggest expenses are the recurring expenses that will come as part of having a baby - diapers, food, and education later on.
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding experiences that anyone can have. It can also be extremely stressful and difficult. It’s not the easiest thing that you’ll do, and it can be one of the hardest experiences of your life. Don’t expect to live the live that you see on social media every day all the time. Learn about what parenting is really like - there are a lot of highs, but there are an equal number of lows as well.
For some people, two kids are easier than one. If you already have a child, then you should consider that as your children get older, you won’t have to be the sole entertainment provider for your child. They’ll be able to play together and keep each other entertained. This is a huge benefit for you as a parent as it’s often very difficult to constantly try to entertain your kids and be with them all the time.
Don’t feel like you have to keep the child. As we started with, this is a decision that you should make along with your partner or other support that you have to be there for you. Being a parent is a huge responsibility, and if you’re not invested, your child will know it as they get older. For some people, the best decision is to wait until the time that they’re in a position to actually be able to take care of their child.
Unexpected kids happen. If you’re able and willing, you should keep the baby and raise and love it. However, make the decision that is best for you as it will be best for the child as well.
