Letting kids do something creative, and then having something to show for it really makes them happy. You can jump in on the fun as well.
We’ve been doing a lot of art projects lately. Being stuck at home has forced us to get into more art projects than we’d done in the past. Our kids like being able to make something that is bright and colorful.
Our art supplies were pretty minimal a few months back. While we have some nicer art supplies that my wife has used in the past, they aren’t really things that are suitable for younger children. That meant we had to find some supplies that the kids could use beyond what we already had.
Check out some of the fun supplies we’d highly recommend after trying way too many things.
Twistable Crayons
These things are awesome. Of course we’ve had crayons for a long time, but they are just a total mess. Kids love to unwrap crayons, break them, and just not take very good care of them in general.
These things are made to help avoid that. They are inside of this plastic tube and they can be twisted out as you need more. It allows kids to push really hard while coloring without breaking the crayon in half. It also keeps all of your crayons the same length so it’s easier to actually keep them in the box and find them.
This is by far my favorite purchase of the whole bunch.
Pipe cleaners, puff balls, and eyes
We’ve been making some fun little creatures with these supplies. We have so many pipe cleaners that I’m not sure they’ll ever run out at this point. I’ve been watching some videos on making different things out of pipe cleaners - it’s pretty impressive some of the creations people have come up with. Our creations often pale in comparison.
We got the puff ball and eye packs so that the kids can glue the pipe cleaners, balls, and eyes either together, or onto paper. They’ve also made fun items with all of these things, and they enjoy having something a little bit different to use. They like to use the eyes along with the crayons above to draw crazy people and animals.
Wood popsicle sticks
These wood sticks are great for gluing together and coloring or drawing on. There are a lot of different ways that you can use these sticks, and the kids don’t disappoint. While I like to glue several of them together, the kids prefer to use them more one off as it’s easier for them.
You can use these along with the items above to make animals or creatures out of wood sticks. I like using the pipe cleaners with the sticks and the puff balls to make different creations. There are a lot of ideas on the internet, so take a look around.
Water colors
We've gone through a lot of water colors lately. My kids love to paint with these things. They have come up with a lot of creative ideas, and they also like to do simple things as well - rainbows, homes, and so forth.
By far their favorite thing to do is use these like finger paints. Get your fingers a little wet, and then touch the paints and you've to got an instant brush. It's a bit mess, but they have a lot of fun with it and can go for quite some time.
Conclusion
This is only the tip of the iceberg for art supplies. We’ve tried several other items as well, but these have stuck the most with us. Would love to hear what others are using.
