Even if you’re not a great singer, you should sing to your kids. They will enjoy hearing your voice.

Singing can be a lot of fun. It can also be scary if you’re not used to doing it in front of other people, or if you’ve never really sung in your life. As a parent, you have an audience that will be ready to listen to you, let you make a fool of yourself, and not laugh or judge you in any way.

In reality, you won’t be making a fool of yourself in front of your kids by singing to them. In fact, your kids will likely want you to continue to sing to them once you’ve finished whatever it is that you choose to sing. Kids love to hear their parents voice singing a fun and happy song.

Choose something that you think your kids will enjoy hearing, and that won’t be too hard for you to actually sing. For example, a simple lullaby is often a great choice for singing to your baby who is having a tough time comforting themselves. For a toddler, something like Old MacDonald is simple and they get to hear you make some funny noises as well. For older children, let them do the singing.

Helping your child fall to sleep and comfort themselves through a song in their ear can be quite rewarding as a parent. While you may not have a great singing voice, your child will be able to comfort themselves simply based off of the notes in your voice. They won’t care if you’re on tune or not either.

Once your kids are toddlers, you will likely sing plenty of the same songs over and over and over. It can actually become a bit tiresome to sing the same songs multiple times, but just keep at it. Hearing your kids start to sing along and make the sounds along with you is another one of those fun moments. If you’re really tired of singing, you can always use an Amazon Echo device to do the singing or buy a separate simple song device. While you shouldn’t always use the device - the point here is that the kids hear your voice - it can save you when you’re singing the same song for the 50th time in a day.

Once kids start going to school, they will start bringing home songs that they’ve learned in school. This is a great opportunity to listen to them sing. If they want you to join in then go ahead and do so. While you likely won’t know the words at first, you can always look them up online to help you better know the tune.

As your kids go through grade school, they'll continue to learn new songs. Continue to encourage them to sing, and sing with them if they'll let you. While your kids may not grow up to be great singers, learning a little bit about how music works is a great lesson for them.

Singing to your kids and with them is a simple and fun activity. You don’t have to sing in front of others, but your kids will enjoy hearing the sound of your voice from the simple melodies that you sang to them growing up.
