Still cold outside? Doesn’t mean you can’t play tag.

After being outside all summer and into the fall, winter is always tough being stuck inside with the kids. This is the time of year where you start looking for more unique solutions to having the kids getting antsy all of the time. Kids simply don’t do well being stuck inside all of the time, nor do adults.

The top idea is to get outside and play in the snow and cold. Of course, this takes a lot of time and energy to accomplish. You have to get the kids dressed up, and then afterwards everyone is usually cold and wet which means that you have to get everyone all warmed up again. If you’ve got a decent amount of time though, then definitely go for it.

If you’re looking for a quick idea that isn’t messy, then a quick game of tag inside is an easy way to keep the kids entertained and moving. You can start and stop very easily since you’ll be inside already. If you have just a few minutes, then tag inside is a really simple and great option.

Playing tag inside can be a bit dangerous, so you’ll need to work with your kids on some rules to keep things safe. You don’t want anyone getting hurt, and so you don’t want the kids running around as fast as they can in the house unless you’ve got a huge open space. One of the ways to accomplish this is to set up your game of tag so that you can only walk (speedwalk). No running allowed. This will help to keep kids from running into things and knocking things over. It also helps with the limited space issue that you’ll be dealing with.

You should also definitely make sure that you have a good no tag back rule. It’s all too easy to touch someone back when you can’t get more than 15 feet away from them. If it’s just two of you playing, then set a 5 second rule to let the person get away from the other - usually with 2 people we’re just looking at chasing after one another rather than a real game of tag.

Make sure that any rooms that are off limits are specified as well. If you have an office, or other room with items that you don’t want accidentally broken, then you're not allowed to go in those rooms. Your kids should already know they're not allowed in those rooms to play, so just reiterate as needed.

Once you have a few rules in place, you’re ready to go - simply pick someone to be it, and get going. Use sofas, chairs, and other furniture to move around. The fun to tag inside is that you’re not going to be running like you are outside, but rather you’ll be using the items in your home strategically to get away.

Tag can be a winter game inside, just like the summer. Get your kids up and moving with a fun game of tag. Get their heart rate up, and get yours up as well.
