This is part of our breakfast series: simple and healthy breakfast ideas that can be made quickly for busy parents. Skip the cereal everyday, and help build a healthy foundation for yourself and your kids.
This is probably one of the harder breakfasts that we make on a regular basis in our home. It’s also probably a bit unhealthier than some of the others. All that being said, it’s still an easy recipe and you can make it a bit healthier than how I’ll lay it out below.
I didn’t even know the name of this dish. A quick search brought it up for me though. I know that I used to eat it when I was younger, and it’s one of those meals that my kids both enjoy.
My kids also like watching me make this meal. I think it’s just having a hole in the middle of a piece of bread that an egg goes into, but I’m not sure. Kids can be funny sometimes.
If your kids don’t like eggs, this may be a way to sneak some eggs into them. Of course, they may just eat the bread around the outside and not touch the egg, but it could be worth a try as well.
How to make egg-in-a-hole
I started this post by stating that this is probably one of the harder breakfasts we make. Realistically, it’s still quite easy and quick to make.
There are 3 ingredients in this recipe: bread, eggs, and margarine or butter. That’s all you’ll need.
First off, turn on your stove to high and place a frying pan on it. I’d recommend a bit of butter or oil spray, but it’s not required.
Take your bread, and apply butter on both sides of the bread. Apply as much or as little butter on your bread as you’d like.
Once the butter is applied on both sides of the piece of bread, cut a hole in the middle of the bread. You’ll be placing an egg in the middle of the piece of bread in a minute, so you’re going to need to make sure it’s large enough for that.
Place your piece of bread, with the whole in it, on the frying pan. Crack an egg, and place it in the middle. Take the piece of bread that you cut out of the middle and place it on the frying pan as well. If you want to add any spices, now would be the time to do so.
Leave the bread and edge there for about 3 minutes, and then flip it over for another 3 minutes. You can use the little piece of bread that was cut out of the middle to check if your bread and egg are ready to be flipped.
Once both sides are cooked, you pull it off the stove, and enjoy.
Conclusion
Simple and effective, but still quite tasty. Another favorite in our household.
