This recipe is simple, healthy, and delicious.
This is part of our breakfast series: simple and healthy breakfast ideas that can be made quickly for busy parents. Skip the cereal everyday, and help build a healthy foundation for yourself and your kids.
One of my favorite breakfasts is a simple breakfast sandwich. Going to McDonalds, and ordering one of their breakfast sandwiches is delicious and something I used to love as a kid. It is not something we would do often, but I certainly enjoyed it. While making one of those breakfast sandwiches at home is possible, it’s a bit beyond our definition of “quick,” but this sandwich tastes excellent as well - we’ll give tips on making a sandwich similar to a fast food sandwich as well.
Breakfast is often a meal that people don’t have a lot of time for. You’re trying to get ready for work, you’re trying to get kids ready for school, and you simply don’t have a lot of time in the morning. It’s one of the primary reasons that people fall back to something like cereal as you don’t need to do anything. Obviously, cereal is generally one of the worst meals you can eat in the morning.
Fortunately, this meal is very simple and can be made in less than five minutes, especially if you’ve pre-made your eggs. Even if you didn’t pre-cook your eggs, this meal can still be made quite quickly and tastes delicious - it’s been one of our favorite meals the past several weeks. The kids and adults both enjoy it a lot.
Here’s the way we generally make this meal:
- Toast a single slice of bread
- Slice a hard-boiled egg
- Slice tomato and/or any other vegetables you want (cucumbers and avocados are delicious)
- Put on toasted bread
- Put slice of deli ham on top of sandwich
- Place lettuce on top if desired
In order to make this really quick to make, you’ll want your eggs hard-boiled already. We generally hard-boil several eggs on the weekend so that we have them to quickly grab during the course of the week as needed. If you don’t have hard-boiled eggs, then you can simply fry an egg to put on the sandwich as well, or you can use a microwave egg maker (they’re actually surprisingly good.
If you want to make this meal a little bit more like what you get at your local fast food restaurant, then you can make a couple of changes to the above recipe. First off, switch the bread out with an English muffin. Next, you’ll need to either cook your sausage, or else pre-cook your sausage on the weekend and warm it up in the microwave when you need it. If you need something quickly, then you’ll definitely want to pre-cook your sausage.
With just a couple of small changes, you now have a very simple sandwich that will taste better than what they serve at your local fast food restaurant and will be healthier as well. You also have the ability to add or remove things as you’d like. We don’t generally use cheese, but adding it as well is an option.
Making breakfast sandwiches is a delicious and simple way to make your breakfast one of the best meals of the day. Don’t settle for cereal, make something healthier.
