When you need a snack to eat, choose something healthy.

Unless your mind and body are perfectly tuned, there will be many days where you’re craving a snack between meals. This is perfectly normal, and you should be prepared for this to happen. Make sure that you have healthy snacks in your home in order to keep your body fueled with the best foods possible.

When you start craving food, you want something quick and easy. You’re not going to wait for a long time while you bust something out to make. You need something you can grab and get in your body. If you keep your kitchen stocked with junk food, then this is what you’re going to eat.

The easiest way to avoid unhealthy snacks is to simply not buy them at the store. If you don’t have a bag of potato chips, you’re going to find something else that you can eat. Keeping healthy snacks on hand is the easiest way to make sure you’re choosing healthy snacks when you want something.

Simple healthy snacks

There are so many healthy snack options, that you shouldn’t run out of choices. Below are just a few simple ideas to help you stock your kitchen accordingly.

Fruits and vegetables

Vegetables are one of the best options for healthy snacks. The number of calories in most vegetables is so low compared to how much food that you can eat. It’s very easy to eat a few sticks of celery, or several carrots, and start to feel full without really having eaten that many calories. Vegetables are a great snacking option.

If you’re craving something a little bit sweeter, then fruits are also a good option. You do need to be careful with fruits as they’re more calorie dense than vegetables. However, if you’re choosing between a candy bar and fruit to get something sweet, fruit will win hands down every time. The unprocessed sugars in fruit are much healthier for you overall.

The above are just a few ideas. We love to keep apples, bananas, and oranges on hand for when someone wants a snack. Besides carrots, we have found that tomatoes are a great snack when you’re craving something a little bit different. We like to eat them just like an apple. There’s always plenty of salad/lettuce on hand as well to be made into salads.

Nuts

I absolutely love nuts. They are one of my favorite snacks. To be honest, I eat way more nuts than I probably should, but they are absolutely delicious. We always have peanuts on hand in our home, and I’ll often eat a handful of them per day. Our kids love peanuts as well, and I’m generally happy to let them eat them.

Besides peanuts, we like to try to have at least one other nut on hand. We generally prefer pecans, but we’ll also do almonds and walnuts. Pistachios are a rare treat, but they’re also quite tasty and quite addictive.

With nuts, you need to make sure you’re controlling how many of them you eat as they are pretty calorie dense. That’s great for someone who is doing intermittent fasting, but if you’re trying to spread your calories across the day more, then you probably shouldn’t eat too many of them.

Yogurt

Yogurt can be an extremely healthy and tasty option when you’re craving something sweet. Greek yogurt is a popular choice when you’re looking for under 100 calories, but with plenty of protein and other vitamins.

As usual with yogurt, make sure you understand how much sugar is in the brand that you buy. Many yogurts are so filled with sugar that they’re actually quite unhealthy for you. Choose plain yogurt when possible, and mix in a fresh fruit or applesauce at home.

Popcorn

If you want something with a bit of a crunch to it, then popcorn maybe just the thing for you. When you think of popcorn, you may be thinking of the popcorn they sell at the movie theater. If that’s the case, then you should remove this from your snack list. Popcorn sold at the movie theater is quite unhealthy due to how much better and salt they put on it.

For a healthy alternative, you need to be using a popcorn air popper. Air popped popcorn has no extra butter or calories added to it. Of course, it’s going to taste pretty plain compared to the stuff loaded with butter, but once you get used to it you may find the stuff in the theater to have too much butter and salt. Air popped popcorn gives a nice crunch and can help to fill a craving you may have.

Conclusion

Keep healthy snacks on hand for when you’re craving something between meals. You’ll find that it’s easier to eat healthy when you do, and you may find that your kids also enjoy a healthy snack. Building a healthy lifestyle will benefit you and your family.
