When you really need to shut out the rest of the world, a pair of earplugs can really do the trick. They can help you get that much needed sleep.
If you have a child who is up a lot at night, and you have trouble sleeping through their crying, then getting a pair of earplugs is a great option. They will take a little bit of getting used to, but they can be quite effective once you’ve figured them out.
Of course, if you are going to be using earplugs, then your partner needs to be responsible for the kids. You shouldn’t be using earplugs when you’re responsible for getting up with a kid at night - you could miss something serious that is going on with your child. Don’t use earplugs if someone else isn't taking responsibility for the kids.
Assuming you’ve got the all clear to use earplugs, then use them as much as you need. You’ll likely find that they will fall out at some point during the night, but oftentimes it’s getting back to sleep after your child is crying that you need them the most. Even if you have to put them back in a couple of times at night, it will be better than laying on your bed listening to a child cry - it’s pretty impossible to get back to sleep when that’s happening.
As I’ve discussed before, my wife and I would often take turns getting up with the kids at night in order to sleep through the night. This means that I had a set time when I could sleep, guilt free, and not have to get up with the kid. My wife got the same thing during the other half of the night. While we didn’t always need earplugs, there were some nights where they were super helpful to have. Kids won’t always calm right down, and so having the earplugs when needed was extremely helpful.
In terms of what earplugs to buy, I’ve tried several different ones, but I’ve found that none of them are perfect. They fall out at night, they get lost, and overall, they’re not really meant for sleeping. As such, I’d recommend just getting a pack of them. They’re not very expensive, and you won’t be worried about losing them as they are so cheap. I like these basic ear plugs as they fit most ears - just squeeze them down a bit, and then push them in your ear for them to expand and fill the space.
Earplugs that go over your ears aren’t going to be very great for sleeping unless you spend the whole night literally frozen on your back. While they won’t come out of your ears, they also won’t let you turn your head. We spent a lot of time looking for better options than the basic earplugs, but couldn’t find anything worthwhile. At the end of the day, a simple and cheap earplug was our best option.
If you’re having trouble sleeping through a screaming child, earplugs are an excellent choice to help dampen the noise. Throw them in, and enjoy some wonderful sleep.
