The Kindle for kids may be right if you have got a big reader.
Considering how much we love reading around here, it may come as a surprise that we had no idea what the Kids Kindle was when we heard about it the first time - we thought it was a joke. It turns out it is not, and it has been out for quite some time. Go figure. Clearly our kids are not reading enough books, or else they are still a bit too young to have their own Kindle, who knows. It still presents pretty solid value.
Whatever the case may be, we did some deep diving into this version of the Kindle, and it turns out that it’s simply a Kindle but it has the kids case built on it. Well, it’s really a little bit more than that. If you want, think of it like a Kindle Fire Kids Edition, which we’re actually big fans of. Compared to the standard Kindle Fire, the Kids edition has some additional benefits that make sense for kids.
Similar to the Kindle Fire Kids Edition, the Kids Kindle also has the worry free break guarantee. This is probably the number one reason to buy the Kids version of either of these tablets over the regular edition. As you’re likely well aware, your kid is very likely to break their Kindle - far more likely than you are usually. The kids version of these devices is perfect in that regard as they’ll replace it if breaks within 2 years.
Similarly, the device comes with a Kids subscription for the first year that gets access to several popular books - namely the entire Harry Potter series is included, as well as several other popular kids books. The Kindle Fire has a similar subscription that gets access to kid friendly content, and that is targeted at kids. This is helpful as a parent so you don’t have to constantly try to get something appropriate for them.
It also comes with a case directly on it - there are several designs you can choose from for your child. While this isn’t that great of a feature, you at least don’t have to worry about trying to find a case on top of the Kindle. A case is a must have for a Kindle, even as an adult, so it simply saves you the extra step of trying to find yet another case for the device. Choose the one that you want and you’re done.
One of the big downsides with the kids devices is that it’s not the Paperwhite - that's' too bad because the Paperwhite is by far the best choice for the Kindle line. The way the Paperwhite is lit makes it awesome to read on - in fact I find it hard to read on the regular Kindle after years of reading on the Paperwhite. Your kids may not care, but it’s something to consider when looking for what you want to get your child.
If your child already has a Kindle Fire, but they only use it for reading, then a Kindle definitely makes sense for your child. Anyone who is doing any significant amount of reading on their device should have an e-reader. It will save your eyes far better than using the LCD screen on the fire or other tablet. If you have a big reader in your child, then you should definitely grab a Kindle, kids edition or not.
The Kids Kindle seems to present pretty good value. If you’re looking into getting one for your child, then we’d recommend you go for it.
