A frisbee is a cheap way to keep kids, and adults, entertained outside. It’s a great way to get everyone moving and helping kids learn a bit of hand eye coordination as well.

When my wife and I first got married, we would play frisbee nearly everyday during the summer. We lived in an apartment complex that had a park less than a minute from our front door. We’d go out and throw the frisbee back and forth for a few minutes, just to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

After moving away and having kids, we didn’t play frisbee for quite some time. It got packed away, and life got busy with other things. While we remained active, and tried to play games outside, frisbee just wasn’t one of the things we did a lot of.

As my kids have gotten older, and I have looked for fun activities to do with them, we pulled the frisbee back and out, and my kids love to play with it.

In order to help our kids a little bit, I actually bought the Aerobie Flying Rings. They are easier to throw far, and easier to catch as well. I love taking them to a big park and throwing them as far as I can. We use them in our backyard and throw them from one end to the other. My 9 year old son has learned to throw it quite well, and sometimes a little too well.

The fun thing about the Aerobie ring is that it’s light enough for a 2 year old to also pick it up and give it a little throw. We’re still working on getting the youngest to have it thrown flat, but it’s fun to play with him as well with it.

Frisbee’s are excellent for teaching kids to throw and catch items. You can always use a baseball as well, but that’s just not something I was really ever into when younger. A frisbee requires your child to make a judgement on a disc that is flying in the air and to get their hand in place to catch it. Throwing a frisbee also takes coordination and judgement to know how hard to throw it, and at what angle.

In addition to getting kids to learn coordination, throwing a frisbee is a great way to be active. You have to get outside, you have to run and chase a frisbee around, and you have to throw it. It can be a great activity for multiple people, or just for you and a child.

If you have a disc golf park in your area, they can also be a fun activity. You will use specialized discs for a golf park, but they are also a really fun way to take the skills you’ve been practicing in the yard or park, and have a bit more of a challenge - I’m quite poor at them. Once your kids are able to throw a standard frisbee, disc golf is something they’ll likely enjoy. Even if your kids aren’t great at throwing a standard frisbee, if they enjoy being outside, then this is an activity worth a try.

If you don’t have one, get a frisbee, and go out and enjoy a new challenge. It’s a great way to spend time with your kids and family.
