Sometimes, you just need to get away from everyone and everything. A 5 to 10 minute walk can really help you to calm down and relax.
Walking is a great way to get your heart pumping, the oxygen moving to your brain, and calm you from a stressful day. Going on a walk is one of my favorite ways to cool down after something at home upsets me. Unfortunately, as a parent of two kids, I don’t have this opportunity very often.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to walk with my family too. Finding rocks or other treasures along the road can be a fun way to spend a bit of time with the kids. It can be stressful as well if you’re kids don’t like to listen and want to constantly get out into the street.
Sometimes, you just need to get away and decompress from everyone. Going for a quick walk around the block or neighborhood is a great way to do that. It gives you a few minutes to just clear your head and remember what’s really important in your life. We get so busy sometimes, that it’s easy to not leave time to meditate or think.
Walking will allow you those few minutes of getting your thoughts in order, and recommitting to your goals. When you’re walking alone, try to clear your mind a bit.
When you get home, the kids will be waiting, so make sure you’ve calmed yourself.
The other thing I really like to do when we can is to just go out for a walk with my wife. Those opportunities are pretty rare with young children, but when we can, we take the opportunity to do so. For us, that usually only happens when a grandparent is in town to watch the kids.
Getting away from home where there are so many distractions will allow you to more easily focus on the conversation and discussion that you will have. It’s too easy to get distracted by kids, media, or phones when at home.
Try to get outside whenever you’re able to, and if you need to really destress, take a walk as it really calms the nerves.
