Reading For Fun

Reading is fun. At the very least, reading can be fun. You may think that reading is this terrible thing that has to be done, but in reality that does not have to be the case at all. Reading can take you to new worlds, it can provide you with new information about an important topic that you are wondering about, and it can introduce you to people from throughout history that have had a significant impact on the world.

If you think reading is no fun, then there’s a good chance that you haven’t found books that you truly enjoy reading. For many people, reading is something that they had to do as part of their education. They didn’t get any say in what they read, and then they had to write papers and take tests on those books. For many, it really ruins the experience of reading, and what it can really bring into your life.

There’s no question that there needs to be some type of assessment on reading in school. If we didn’t assess people’s level of reading, then you’d struggle even more in school as you’d be either way ahead or way behind and no one would know. Unfortunately, there’s not a simple answer about this with the current education system. Regardless, reading is often spoiled because of the current system.

Fortunately, outside of school and education, you can read whatever you want. You don’t have to read the classics if you don’t want to. You can read a book that is completely inappropriate for an academic environment, and it doesn’t matter. You’re in charge when you read, and you can choose to read the things that make you happy. Find books that you actually like - you’ll find that you want to read.

Reading for fun really allows you to broaden your horizons. You can choose to read your favorite genre most of the time, and slip in something different every now and then. As you find yourself wanting to read books, you’ll find it’s easier to try different genres of books since you get to choose what you read between them. You may still read a classic book, but it’s not one after another.

Reading is an excellent way to spend free time because not only can it take you to a different world completely, it keeps your mind engaged while you read. You have to actively think about what you’re reading and your mind is forced to work a little bit. That doesn’t mean that it’s hard work, especially when you’re reading what you like, it just means that you are able to destress while actively reading.

Finding books you enjoy reading simply means that you have to read. Use your local library. If you have a Kindle, you can get books from your library the same as a regular book except you don’t even have to go to the library. You can always purchase books as well, but that can add up fast. The library is generally your best option for finding books, and they will have all of the newest releases available also.

Read for fun. If you’re unsure, choose a book that simply sounds interesting that will have no benefit outside of you enjoying it. After you read one enjoyable book, do it with another book. Eventually you’ll find that reading really can be fun.
